by JamesReading Ode to my flip phone reminded me of Frank in You've Got Mail, singing the praises of his typewriter as everyone is getting computers and getting online. Society, for better or worse, has picked a new technological successor and the old ways โ your flip phone, your typewriter, will eventually disappear.
But this line โ this line hit me hard.And by privacy I donโt mean cookies or my Social Security number or whateverโI mean the fragile sphere of imagination in which I exist when Iโm not diddling about online. I mean whatโs left of my nondigital self. When I clack your two halves shut, you glorious techno-mollusk, thatโs it. Sauron cannot see me.

by JamesA bit worried I've spent so much time focusing on features in Tanzawa so I could get my blog off Wordpress that there's bugs in the non-happy paths. So I think my next focus is going increasing quality.ย
Finished the first s step: integrating my tox setup ( pytest, typecheck, and flake8 linting) into GitHub actions, so I can no longer merge if things are failing. Next step is to fix my typecheck errors and root out some bugs I've been running into recently (with tests!)
Once it's passing and the major bugs have been finished, I think I'm going to make a public release for developers / technically inclined people. -

by JamesEnvironment values are strings. True becomes "True" and False becomes "False".
And, well, what does "False" evaluate to? True. True.I think the best way to handle settings with Django is to use django-environ.ย Not only does it handle .env files. It also has a lot of utility methods for converting values to native python types ( bool, list etc..) and using database urls. It's great.
My airbot settings.py uses it. My airbot settings also lets you specify the path for your .env with the ENV_FILE environment variable, so you can create different files for different environments. -

by James- I checked my DMs on twitter for the first time in a couple of months and I found a request to send me a DM from early March. I don't recall ever getting a notification. It was from a TV producer in Houston wanting to to a segment about my Airbot and @kuukihouston. C'est la Vie.
- The tomato seeds have come out of the ground and the bell peppers have just started peaking out. I may yet eat some "free" veggies yet.
- We got visited by a Japanese white gecko (yamori). They're known as protectors of the house and an omen of good luck. Good luck as he may be, he's not allowed in the in the house. Kicking him out of the entrance was a fun 3 minutes with a broom while Leo and Yumi watched.
- Ever wondered how to trim trees next to high voltage power lines in the middle of the forest? If you answered "with 8 huge circular saws spinning from a helicopter", you'd be correct. How do I know? I watched Summer in the Finnish Lake District on Arte.tv. It (like most of the documentaries I watched on Arte.tv) was in German, but had English subs.ย
It makes senses sense that a machine as hardcore as this would come from Finland, after they, they do have the highest number of metal bands per capita. Recommended, if only to watch a helicopter with saws dangling from it trim trees next to high voltage power lines.
